It’s been a while since my last blog post (because real life takes priority over blogging), but today I’m back with a new beauty product review.
I recently purchased a bunch of new products from the Sephora VIB sale. One of them was the Sol de Janeiro – Brazilian Beauty on the Go set, which contains a 2.5 oz jar of Bum Bum cream and 0.21 oz Brazilian Kiss Cupuaçu Lip Butter. Apparently, the Bum Bum cream is a cult favorite in Brazil, and it’s now available in the U.S. at Sephora.
Opening the jar, you will first notice the tropical scent, which is described on the Sephora website as a pistachio-caramel scent. Basically it’s a nutty sweet smell, kind of like cocoa butter. The texture is similar to a body butter (like a Body Shop body butter) – thick and creamy but not hard to spread. It absorbs quickly. The scent lasts all day, which could be good if you want to smell like the cream, or bad if you want to wear perfume because the scent of the cream may overpower the perfume.
Despite the lovely scent, unfortunately this product gets a “thumbs-down” from me. The product did not moisturize my skin very well. I tend to have dry skin in the fall and winter, plus I live in a dry climate anyway. I usually rely on pure grape seed oil or pure shea nilotica butter as my normal moisturizer. If you live in a humid climate or don’t have dry skin, this product may be a sufficient moisturizer for you. But if you are like me and have dry skin, I think you’ll be disappointed.
The other disadvantage is the price. This set was $25 and the 8.1 oz jar is priced at $45, which may seem okay for a luxury brand sold at Sephora, but definitely much more than a drugstore product. If you want a similarly scented product for a fraction of the cost, I would recommend Vaseline Cocoa Radiant Body Gel Oil (around $6.29 for 6.8 oz). I have used this product in the past and love it!
The Brazilian Kiss Cupuaçu Lip Butter is a cute chubby stick. It smells similar to the Bum Bum cream but has a slight citrus scent mixed in. I like that it has a scent but no taste. I despise lip products that taste sweet….just a preference of mine! This lip butter is a good lip moisturizer but not so great that I would buy it again. Anyway, I could not even find it sold separately at the time of this blog post. If you want a similarly scented lip balm, I would recommend Vaseline Lip Therapy Cocoa Butter Lip Balm Tin ($3.49 for 0.6 oz). I just bought it to compare to the Brazilian Kiss Cupuaçu Lip Butter, and it didn’t disappoint! At the price point, I’ll definitely be buying the Vaseline lip balm tin again!
If you want a great lip balm with a cocoa butter scent, my absolute favorite is Badger cocoa butter lip balm. The scent is a bit different than the Brazilian Kiss Cupuaçu Lip Butter, but I actually like it better and it’s a perfect price (around $5)!
I hope this review was helpful to you. Overall, the Sol de Janeiro products smell nice, but they’re not so effective that I would repurchase them, considering the price. I’ll stick with my drugstore dupes!
