Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Farah of Summer Souk, an online retailer offering sarees, Indowestern apparel, bridal wear, jewelry, shoes, housewares, and much more! Summer Souk is based in New Zealand and ships worldwide (only $20 shipping to USA). They offer coveted designer brands such as Payal Singhal and Sapana Amin, and even have their own line of skirts coming out soon.
What motivated you to start your business?
I have an Arts academic background and a great interest in art in all forms, literature, fine arts, architecture, and I also have an IT academic background. With a strength in communication I ended up working in the Trade Marks field for an Intellectual Property company for a number of years, where I learned a lot about business development and intellectual property. When the idea for Summer Souk began it was based on a need I had when I was looking for my bridal trousseau and there was no local point of contact to assist me. I had also encountered a lot of amazing designers in the East, and I thought it would be amazing if there was a local platform that enabled quality designers from this region to be showcased to the world. Having a online store, and also producing a range of our own goods (we are releasing a small range of embroidered raw silk maxi skirts in the NZ spring, and are releasing a range of suzani bedding this coming week) also provides me with some creative fulfillment which I didn’t have an my previous office environment. I feel like I have a good balance in my current job.
Why did you choose the name “Summer Souk?”
Souk comes from the Arabic Suq and means a marketplace, and Summer is the happiest time of year for me, it’s when my birthday is, and is full of colour, summer is also the time for weddings.
Summer Souk has a huge selection of South Asian products, a few of my favorites being the Suzani pillows, Indowestern separates by Urvashi Joneja, and tops from Hemant & Nandita. How do you decide what to carry in your online store?
I select designers based on my own personal taste, combined with the need to balance out styles to cater for the public’s need, and also with the intention of providing a platform for new up and coming designers to showcase their goods.
If you had to narrow it down, what is your favorite product currently offered on Summer Souk?
Our new Falguni And Shane Peacock Anarkalis are amazing!
What trends do you think are popular right now with South Asian women?
Pastels and florals are a major trend, our Prathyusha Garimella range covers the pastels, and the Falguni and Shane Peacock range ups the sophistication level with baroque floral prints.
I know Summer Souk is launching its own line of skirts soon. Can you give us a sneak peak at some of the designs, and when they will be available?
They should be available towards the end of September, here is a sneak peak from our recent photoshoot:
Thanks so much to Farah of Summer Souk for this interview, and giving us some insight into the fashion world! I look forward to seeing the new products Summer Souk will offer in the future, especially their line of skirts!
